Geotechnical investigation, geological & geotechnical evaluation and design for the new Concession Project “Central Greece Motorway E65”

The geological and geotechnical study focused on the detailed assessment of the geological and engineering geological conditions of the project area, with the aim of providing the necessary information to support the design and sizing of the proposed earthworks and engineering structures.

The study included the assessment of the stratigraphy and tectonic setting, as well as the hydrogeological and engineering behaviour of the geological formations. Potentially problematic geological areas were identified and assessed in relation to the proposed works, supporting the selection of the most appropriate design solution.

Particular attention was also given to the preliminary assessment of the suitability of materials arising from excavation for use within the project, as well as to the identification of alternative borrow areas capable of providing the required materials.

The scope of the study included geological, tectonic and hydrogeological mapping at a scale of 1:1,000 over an area of approximately 12 km², covering alternative alignments with a total length of approximately 40 km. The work also included the recording of 200 water occurrence and investigation points, groundwater level measurements, and the preparation of geological longitudinal profiles and cross-sections, tectonic diagrams and rock mass classifications. Problematic areas affecting the construction of the project were also identified and assessed.
