Geotechnical surveys and assessments of the new metro extensions of Athens. Line 3: Piraeus – Evangelistria

The geological study concerned the extension of Athens Metro Line 3 along the Piraeus–Evangelistria section and included the investigation and assessment of the geological, engineering geological and hydrogeological conditions of the area.
The study included geological reconnaissance, the recording of water occurrence points and key land uses, as well as the collection and assessment of data from 27 investigation boreholes carried out as part of the project and 8 previous boreholes in the area. Bibliographic data and historical aerial photographs were also reviewed.
Based on the available data, a preliminary ground model was developed for the project, together with engineering geological descriptions and assessments of investigation boreholes, rock mass classifications and geological and geotechnical longitudinal profiles. Water occurrence points were also inventoried and groundwater levels were measured to identify and assess potential geological and hydrogeological issues that could affect construction.
